We purchased a 30 acre property in February 2000 on Hodzic Road, Bilwon (approximately 20kms north of Mareeba in Far North Queensland).
Four months later, we decided that we would like to own a fox terrier. So we purchased a bitch (Lady) from a breeder in Mareeba (Edna Foster). As she was already 6 months old when we got her, she had already been named, so we kept the name. Lady was born on the 19th December 2001. On the 26th February 2007, Lady passed on due to chronic kidney failure. She will be sadly missed.
We were enjoying Lady's company so much, that after a certain time, we felt that she was very lonely and needed company, as we were away from her all day at work and she was so bored being on her own for the day. So from the same breeder that we purchased Lady from, we ordered a dog. After a lengthy time of waiting, a dog that suited us finally came along and we named him Buster. Buster was born on the 15th March 2003. On the 28th April 2008, we got home from work and found Buster dead. He died from being bitten by a 5' Eastern Brown snake. He will be sadly missed.
After we got Buster, we decided that we would like to start breeding, so we became registered with Dogs Queensland. To become registered, we had to choose a breeder's prefix. It took us a while to decide on one, as most of the ones that we chose had already been taken. We finally decided on the prefix WAVELABU, which is the first two initials of all our names; eg WA for Wayne, VE for Veronica, LA for Lady and BU for Buster. This is the name that we have also called our property (Wavelabu Kennels).
As we were having so many enquiries from people wanting pups, we decided to look around for another bitch that had different bloodlines. After looking around for many months, we finally found one from a breeder in Gympie (Noreen Curran) and we named her Sheba. Sheba was born on the 24th May 2005.
Late September 2006, we ended up purchasing another bitch from a breeder in Maryborough (Jane Cantlon), that also had different bloodlines to the ones that I already have. As she was already four months old when we got her, she had already been named Annie, so we kept the name. Annie was born on the 23rd May 2006.
In February 2007, we purchased another bitch from the same breeder in Gympie that we got Sheba from. This time she was a tan and white one and we named her Xena. Sheba and Xena are true sisters. Xena was born on the 17th Decembr 2006.
In May 2008, we purchased a tan and white dog from a breeder in Lilydale (Ian Henley) and named him Rusty. Rusty was born on the 27th February 2008. We only had Rusty for a few days and he died on the 6th May 2008 from an existing health problem. He will be sadly missed for the short time that we had him for.
Also in May 2008, we purchased a black and white dog from a breeder in Rockhampton (Darrell Nilsen). As he was already nearly four months old when we got him, he had already been named Jack, so we kept the name. Jack was born on the 14th February 2008.
Late May 2008 (at 4.00am in the morning), Annie gave birth to a beautiful healthy little boy. As we lost his father (Buster) and also nearly lost his mother (Annie) from being bitten by a 5' Eastern Brown snake when Annie was only 4 weeks pregnant, we decided to keep him in remembrance of his father (Buster). It was a miracle that he survived, so because of this we decided to name him Mr Miracle Boy as his pedigree name and Lucky as his general name. Lucky was born on the 29th May 2008.
In August 2008, we purchased a tan and white dog from a breeder in Gatton (Ed Qualischefski) and named him Bundy. Bundy was born on the 4th June 2008.
We don't show our fox terriers, mainly due to limited time but we really enjoy their company and love them very much. Our fox terriers are treated by us as our babies and are spoilt rotten and we don't know what we would do without them.
We love breeding them and find it very hard to say goodbye to the pups when it's time for them to go to their new owners because we get so attached to them.
We are looking forward to continuing breeding and enjoying the company of our fox terriers for many years to come yet.
